Background
- Traffic accidents have been occurring due to “accelerator and braked pedal misapplication.”
- Although accidents due to pedal misapplication do not occur easily, they have been attracting the attention of many people as they have been reported by the news media, etc.
- It is known that elderly drivers are prone to accidents due to pedal misapplication.
- It is not clear why elderly drivers step on the wrong pedal and why they are prone to pedal misapplication.
Objectives
With regard to elderly drivers’ accelerator and brake pedal misapplication accidents:
- Clarify the actual situation through analysis accident statistics and case examples of traffic accidents
- Clarify cognitive functions that are deeply related to pedal misapplication
- Clarify the characteristics of pedals that easy or hard to cause pedal misapplication
