Accident Statistics
Title | Overview of Pedal Misapplication Accidents: Statistical Data of Traffic Accident- |
---|---|
Author | Nobuaki Takubo (National Research Institute of Police Science) |
Overview | Through analysis of traffic accident statistics, I showed the recent situation on pedal misapplication accidents. Particularly, to clarify the recent change in the occurrence of traffic accidents, I compared the current situation with a past analysis result for pedal misapplication accident. |

Overview | People are educated at automobile driving schools on how to operate pedals at the time they receive driver’s licenses, but it is not clearly known how ordinary drivers are actually performing pedal operations. Through Web surveys, we investigated what kind of pedal operation methods are being employed by drivers as well as whether this has any relationship with their experiences in pedal misapplication. | |

Overview | In recent years, the number of occurrence of traffic accidents and accident fatalities has been on the decline, but pedal misapplication accidents have remained flat. There are many points that have not been sufficiently clarified regarding drivers’ driving behavior, and in studying countermeasures against pedal misapplication accidents, it becomes important to grasp the actual situation. In this study, we focused on drivers’ driving positions and their operation of the steering wheel and foot pedals, and studied the actual situation of the drivers’ driving behavior from the results of questionnaire surveys and experiments using actual vehicles. |

Overview | In pedal misapplication accidents, after committing a pedal misapplication (error), the inability to correct that error can lead to a serious accident. We examined whether there are differences in post-error response due to aging as well as whether this is associated with cognitive decline. As a result of the survey, we confirmed that even among elderly people whose cognitive functions have declined but which has not become a problem, the delay in post-error response becomes significant. In addition, it was suggested that reactions immediately before the error strongly affects post-error response among the elderly people. |

Overview | We studied methods of evaluating the decline in the cognitive functions of elderly people by separating the decline into three stages: “discovery,” “judgement,” and “operation.” This is because it depends on the person as to which stage of the function declines earlier. To provide training methods and driver assistance system that suits each person, there is a need for evaluation methods for grasping the characteristics of the cognitive functions of the individual. In this study, for this purpose, we developed an evaluation method using three indicators: eye fixation latencies, P3 latencies of eye fixation related potentials, and the reaction times. It was shown that there are significant differences in these metrics between older and younger people, and that the characteristics of the decline could be captured for each elderly person. |
